Bike Commuting in Seattle: Comfort & Spinal Wellness Tips

7 min read

By Dr. Stephen Lachuta, Chiropractor at Northgate Chiropractic

Cyclist riding on a paved path

Bike commuting is peak Seattle: Burke-Gilman mornings, helmet hair in meetings, the quiet pride of skipping I-5. A few fit and recovery habits help your neck, hands, and low back enjoy the ride as much as your carbon footprint does.

Fit before mileage

Saddle height and reach to the bars change everything. Numb hands or a locked-out neck often improve with professional bike fit—or at least methodical small adjustments.

Posture on the bike

Soft elbows, occasional shoulder blade resets, and looking ahead (not straight down at the front wheel) can reduce upper-back strain. On long flats, change hand positions on the bars.

After you rack the bike

Two minutes of hip openers and thoracic extension before sitting at a desk helps the body transition. Hydrate; Seattle hills are sneaky.

Clinic support for riders

We see cyclists who also sit for work—the combination is common in North Seattle. Chiropractic care can help support mobility so commuting stays joyful.
